the art of weaving moonj Grass Baskets

We have always known baskets to be something very functional and useful. Mainly used as containers, baskets serve a different purpose in different cultures. They are made from distinct materials and styles around the world. Various cultures wove baskets from the resources they had and gave us a unique variety of something so simple yet efficient. One such basket is the grass basket. The Tharu tribe does Moonj grass basketry. Moonj is a perennial wild grass that grows along with the region's ponds and water bodies and is gathered during the monsoon season. Moonj weaves beautiful baskets that are presented as gifts. Moonj is the top layer of the 'Sarpat' grass. It is easier to keep and dry, hence this layer is peeled and knotted. These knots are known as 'Balla' in the area.

The Kaasa grass is first dried before being wrapped in moonj grass and rolled around Kaasa. Basketry motifs are designed by scattering coloured grass to create a pleasant appearance. These baskets are useful for storage and provide a splash of colour to your home's decor.

Speaking of home decor, a home is not complete until its walls are. Baskets add an aesthetic and artistic touch to your wall and home in general.
